Apple unveils M6-powered iMac starting at $1,499
Apple has released a new iMac powered by the M6 processor. The desktop computer retains the previous generation’s colorful enclosure and 24-inch display. The main changes are inside. The iMac will be sold in 7 colors, with the first devices expected to reach customers in the US and other markets starting November 6.
The new M6 chip features up to a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU. It also includes 2 Neural Engine units, each with 16 cores. This component accelerates AI-related computations. According to Apple, the CPU is up to 40% faster than the M4 model and 1.5 times faster in everyday tasks. Graphics performance and the speed of games that use ray-tracing technology, which makes lighting and shadow effects look more realistic, have increased by up to 2 times. The company promises performance that is 18 times higher than that of popular Intel-powered systems. Apple claims that the device processes AI tasks 5 times faster than the M4 and 12 times faster than the M1. Large language models and prompts in LM Studio also run faster. macOS 27 includes the new Apple Intelligence, Siri AI and Spotlight features. Apple Intelligence is not yet available in Europe.
The new model has a memory bandwidth of 170 GB/s. In the previous generation, this figure was 120 GB/s. The base version comes with 16 GB of unified memory, while 24 GB and 32 GB options are also available. The SSD runs 2 times faster. In everyday applications such as Microsoft Excel, performance is 50% faster than with the M4. The difference compared with the M1 model reaches up to 2.5 times.
As before, the iMac uses a 24-inch 4.5K Retina display. The display has a brightness of 500 nits and supports the wide P3 color gamut. The new N1 wireless chip supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 connectivity. The optional 2.5 Gb Ethernet connection is 2.5 times faster than the previous generation. The computer has 4 Thunderbolt 4 ports and can connect to 2 external 6K displays at the same time. However, Thunderbolt 5 is not included. The 12 MP Center Stage camera for video calls and the Desk View feature, which provides an overhead view of the desk, have been retained. The base version with a 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU and 16 GB of memory starts at $1,499 (about 2,550 manats). This price is the same as for the previous generation. The more powerful version with a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU will be sold for $1,699 (about 2,890 manats). Preorders will open on October 28 at 21:10. The box includes accessories matching the computer’s color and a keyboard with Touch ID for fingerprint login.
