Apple Unveils New iPad mini With 8.5-Inch OLED Display
Apple has unveiled the new iPad mini for 2026. The tablet features an 8.5-inch OLED display and is thinner than the previous model. The Wi-Fi model starts at $699 (approximately 1,190 manat). The cellular version will cost $849 (approximately 1,440 manat). Preorders will open October 28, with sales beginning November 6.
The OLED panel replaces the previous model’s 8.3-inch LCD display. Because the bezels around the display are 24% smaller, the tablet’s overall dimensions have not changed significantly. The display has 600 nits of standard brightness and 1,200 nits of peak brightness. In dark environments, the brightness drops to as low as 1 nit. The contrast ratio is 2,000,000 to 1. There is no ProMotion, and the refresh rate is 60 Hz, meaning the display refreshes the image 60 times per second. The tablet’s thickness has been reduced from 6.3 mm to 5.4 mm, and its weight has also decreased. The device is powered by the A20 Pro chip. The chip has a 6-core CPU and a 7-core GPU. A separate Neural Engine handles AI-related computations. The 512 GB model uses a dual 16-core configuration. All versions have at least 12 GB of RAM. The chip can run AI models directly on the device and handle Siri’s new voice features. In Apple’s new Acoustic Display system, the speakers are located inside the display and body. According to the company, this setup delivers more powerful bass, louder sound and clearer highs. The 12 MP front camera has been moved to the tablet’s long edge, making video calls more convenient in landscape orientation. The rear camera is also 12 MP and features Smart HDR 4. The camera records 4K video at 60 frames per second.
The new iPad mini has IP67 water and dust protection. The C2 cellular modem and N1 networking chip manage connectivity. The tablet supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread connectivity. The connector for magnetic accessories has also been moved to the long edge. A dedicated Magic Keyboard will not be released for this model. Therefore, users will need to use a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Support for Apple Pencil Pro and the USB-C Apple Pencil remains.
The iPad mini will be available in models with 128 GB and 256 GB of storage. A 512 GB version is also available for those who want more storage. The color options are Midnight and Starlight. The glare-reducing nano-texture display can be selected only on the 256 GB and 512 GB models. This display will add $100 (approximately 170 manat) to the price. This is the first time a nano-texture display will be available for the iPad mini. The new device replaces the 7th-generation iPad mini released in 2024. It is the 8th generation of the series. The previous model started at $499 (approximately 850 manat). That tablet had an A17 Pro chip and 128 GB of base storage. Support for Apple Pencil Pro was also included. The announcement was made ahead of Apple’s “Pro and Tell” event. A touchscreen MacBook Pro, as well as a MacBook Pro and iMac with the M6 chip, are expected to be shown at the event.
