Google unveils Fitbit Edge fitness tracker with up to 7 days of battery life
Google has unveiled the new Fitbit Edge fitness tracker with a display. Positioned between the Fitbit Air and Pixel Watch, the model is available for preorder for $179.99 (approximately 310 manats) and will go on sale on October 27. In the United Kingdom, the tracker costs 159.99 pounds sterling (approximately 360 manats). The device works with both Android and iPhone phones through the Google Health app.
The capsule-shaped Fitbit Edge has a 1.34-inch hybrid OLED display. For comparison, the previous Charge 6 model had a 1.04-inch display. The new display has a 46 percent larger viewing area and remains clearly visible in sunlight. The body is 11.5 mm thick. A physical button has been placed on the side for navigating the menu. The Fitbit Edge tracks more than 50 workout modes. The Gemini Intelligence feature can automatically recognize up to 100 types of activity. These features will later also be added to the Pixel Watch 5 and Fitbit Air models. Built-in GPS records routes without requiring a phone. Google has improved GPS accuracy by 40 percent. On-screen prompts indicate when users should increase their pace or take a break during a workout. With a Google Health Premium subscription, an AI-powered coach creates a weekly plan and adjusts it to the user's schedule. Health Guardian tracks changes in blood pressure and insulin resistance readings. No manual calibration is required for blood pressure, and no blood test is needed to track insulin resistance. The ECG app assesses heart rhythm. Sleep-stage detection is 15 percent more accurate than in previous generations.
The Fitbit Edge has a 65 mAh battery and lasts up to 7 days on a full charge. Just 5 minutes of charging is enough for 1 day of use. A full charge takes 90 minutes. The device has an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. It is the first model in Fitbit's history with a battery that users can replace. Repair terms will depend on the region and the availability of spare parts.
An altimeter sensor calculates ascents and descents, as well as the number of floors climbed, based on atmospheric pressure. There is also a separate sensor that measures skin temperature without contact. The tracker can be used to control music, calls and notifications. Google Maps directions will be added by the end of the year. Because there is no NFC, contactless payments cannot be made with Google Wallet. The Fitbit Edge will be sold in Obsidian, Fog, Olive and Canyon. Buyers will be able to choose from sport, fabric, magnetic and metal-loop bands. The Stephen Curry special edition starts at $219.99 (approximately 370 manats). This version has a moisture-wicking, water-resistant band. The device includes a 3-month Google Health Premium subscription. A new metal mesh band for the Fitbit Air has also been introduced separately.
