Reddit Introduces 2 Home Feeds: Recommendations and Joined Communities
Reddit is launching 2 feeds called “For You” and “Following” for browsing posts on the home page. The update will be rolled out worldwide in phases over the next few weeks. Like similar options on TikTok, one of these feeds is designed for discovering new topics, while the other is for following selected communities.
“For You” uses an algorithm to select posts that match the user’s interests. It will show both content from communities they have joined and posts from other communities that may interest them. The recommendations will also take into account topics the user has recently viewed. The goal is to make it easier to discover new communities, ideas, and discussions. “Following” shows only posts from communities the user has already joined. Users can switch between the 2 feeds at any time and turn off algorithmic recommendations. Reddit will remember the last feed they viewed, so they will not need to choose again every time they open the app.
The company considers this the first stage of personalized recommendations and plans to test additional options. In the future, users will be able to hide posts and indicate that they want to see less of certain content. Reddit shut down the old general “r/all” feed earlier this year. “For You” will be based more on the user’s personal interests than on the popularity of posts.
The update follows the discontinuation of RSS feeds and restrictions on access to the classic desktop view called “Old Reddit.” Third-party apps that display post archives must migrate to Reddit’s official developer system. Otherwise, they could lose access to the platform entirely. The company is helping approximately 14,000 apps make the transition. Reddit attributes these strict rules to a sharp increase in traffic from AI-powered bots. According to the company, automated requests place a significant load on its servers. Although the new home feeds increase personalized recommendations, the “Following” section will show only communities selected by the user.
