Xreal unveils Aura, the first wired Android XR glasses
Xreal unveiled the Xreal Aura smart glasses, which run on the Android XR platform, at the Android Dev Summit. According to the company, these are the first wired glasses developed for the platform. Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon Reality Elite platform, the device performs all processing in a small processor unit connected by cable. Orders are now open in the U.S., Canada, Japan and South Korea, with deliveries set to begin in mid-November.
The glasses have a Sony-made Micro-OLED display with 1200p resolution. The 120 Hz refresh rate helps make motion appear smoother. Information about the field of view varies: one technical document lists 70 degrees, while another lists 95 degrees. The transparent lenses allow users to see their surroundings, while electrochromic dimming adjusts how much of the background is visible. Xreal Aura weighs 95 g. By comparison, Meta's glasses weigh 69 g. Thanks to Android XR, standard mobile apps and games from the Google Play Store can be opened in 2D or 3D. The device can run Samsung Galaxy XR apps and more than 150 dedicated XR experiences from day one. The list includes NBA App, NASCAR XR App, which displays a live 3D track map, Fallout Factions and The Nutcracker. The glasses track hand movements and also work with a keyboard and game controller.
Gemini can answer questions based on what is visible on the screen and help users understand the information they are viewing. When a laptop, phone or handheld game console is connected directly via a USB-C cable, the device's screen opens in a virtual window. Users can create a large virtual display or multiple monitors. The processor unit also functions as a touchpad, and a separate foldable keyboard accessory is available. Bose technology was selected for the sound system.
The standard price of the version with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage will be $1,279 (approximately 2,170 manats). This model will be sold for $1,099 (approximately 1,870 manats) through the end of December. The standard price of the version with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage is $1,499 (approximately 2,550 manats). During the launch period, that model will cost $1,299 (approximately 2,210 manats). Orders are being accepted on the official website and, in the U.S., also at Best Buy. Xreal Aura does not resemble a bulky VR headset and looks more like ordinary glasses than the Apple Vision Pro. Xreal is promoting it as a portable computer that could replace a tablet or laptop. However, the battery and main processor are housed in a separate unit. As a result, users must also carry that unit while using the glasses.
